Eves Karydas

2018 has been far and away the stand out year of Eves Karydas’ career. After re-emerging on the scene late in 2017 with the powerful single, ‘There For You,’ she’s only gone from strength-to-strength since. She released her stunning, debut album summerskin in September, and it, along with its commanding singles, ‘Further Than The Planes Fly,’ ‘Couch’ and ‘Damn Loyal,’ have received both local and international praise, and seen her recognised as one of the most-exciting, new pop talents in Australian music.

summerskin is a record that documents Eves Karydas’ journey of self-discovery across the globe. After beginning in Cairns as a teen café singer, she would eventually launch her career as Eves The Behavior in Brisbane. Following the release of her debut EP, however, she set off in search of herself, travelling around America and Europe before landing in glamorous Camden, London, “in a small, dingy flat on the fifth floor of an ex-council block, with five other people. And that’s where the record was born.”

She wrote in her bedroom, whisper-singing into her laptop, so as not to disturb her flat mates, eventually piecing enough material together to work with a team of fellow expats, including Australians Sam Dixon (who’s worked with Sia and Adele) and Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, along with producer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, Friendly Fires) – a New Yorker – who all came together to help create summerskin.
“I want to put across a sense of confidence in myself that I never had,” says Eves. “I never tapped into that side of me on the Eves The Behavior stuff. I had to fake it for a while until it started to feel natural, but it has been the most liberating experience for me.”

Throughout this year she’s reinforced the praise she’s received for her music with stunning live performances across the country. From supporting local heroes Cubsport and international star Dua Lipa on their respective Australian tours, through to lighting up the stage at Splendour In The Grass and selling out her own, national headline tour – her reputation as a dynamic live performer has grown exponentially off the back of the music from summerskin.

That reputation was further cemented in August, when she took to the booth to perform for triple j’s coveted Like A Version segment, doing a beautiful rendition of her own song ‘Further Than The Planes Fly,’ followed by a breath-taking tribute to the late, great Aretha Franklin, performing ‘(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,’ just a week after the Queen Of Soul’s passing.
